Jeff’s racing story began behind the wheel of a kart in the Pacific Northwest. From a young age, he showed the raw talent and competitive drive that would carry him throughout his career. In karting, Jeff collected many wins and championships at both the local and regional levels, quickly earning a reputation as a driver destined for bigger things. Those early battles on kart tracks laid the foundation for the racer he would become.
From there, Jeff transitioned into open-wheel racing, climbing into his father’s (Bobby Bird) WMRA midget. It was the start of a new chapter that saw him drive for some of the most respected owners in the sport. He piloted the Churchill family’s WMRA midget in events such as the Copper Classic, raced for Dick Voss in the meticulously maintained #45 WMRA midget and went on to drive winged and non-winged sprintcars for Gary Isaacson and team. As his career progressed, Jeff became a regular competitor in the WILROC and NSRA series where his adaptability and skill made him a threat in every race he entered.
Jeff’s list of accomplishments is as impressive as it is diverse. He captured championships in both the WILROC Winged and Non-Winged Sprint Car Series. Winning races with WILROC, WESCO, NSRA proved his ability to master both disciplines. He added his name to the history books with multiple Strawberry Cup victories, conquering one of the Pacific Northwest’s most prestigious and competitive events. And in a moment that will forever stand as one of the defining highlights of his career, Jeff won the very last Non-Winged Sprintcar race ever held at the famed Western Speedway before it closed down – cementing his place in the track’s legacy.
Jeff’s contributions to racing went far beyond driving. He served as a dedicated board member for both NSRA and WILROC, working to support and strengthen the sport for all racers. His efforts were recognized when he was honoured with the Denny Rand trophy for being the most dedicated member of NSRA – a testament to his passion, commitment and leadership off the track as well as on it.
Not only a driver but also an owner, Jeff purchased his own sprint car from his late friend Dan Fisher, carrying forward their shared love of racing. He also dedicated himself to support crews, team mates and fellow racers, giving back to the sport that had given him so much.
Jeff never forgot the people who helped make his career possible. His family provided the support system that kept him grounded while his crews and close friends played an equally vital role in every success. Over the years, Cam McLean, Rob Cardin, Andy “The Duck” Percy, Curly and many others worked tirelessly to keep the cars fast and the dream alive. Jeff also gives special thanks to Norm Wilcox and Ross Rockett whose vision and dedication created an amazing winged sprint car series on Vancouver island, offering drivers the opportunity to compete and grow in the sport.
