His involvement with the sport of Auto Racing began in 1965 in Victoria. He is still involved after these 45 years of continuous service to the racing community of Victoria. The drivers and crews know he is hard working, generous, dedicated to good service and just a good person always available to assist anyone needing help. He originally came to Victoria from Sarnia, Ontario in his late teens first working as a gas jockey, then in 1964 at 19 years of age, began working at OK Tire. He was taught to hand true race tires and became 1 of only 2 Victorians to do the job proficiently. He did such a good job and was always particular about the finished product. He became the guy most racers relied on to take care of their tirework. Many Friday nights, he would stay late on his own time to be sure the drivers had their tires ready for Saturday night’s race.
After re-locating to four different locations, he purchased the Six Mile Tire Store in 1995. The Victoria racers always followed him. Many cars in several classes have been sponsored by his company. In his 45 years of involvement, he has probably been associated with 75% of all cars, drivers and crews that have entered the back gates at Western Speedway. Every class of race car would be on his list: Stocks; Mini Stocks; Superstocks; Claimers; Sportsman; Drags; Road Racers; Modifieds; Super Modifieds; Old Timers and Sprint Cars.
Here is a small sample of the people he did work for: Billy Foster; Jim Haslam; Ernie West; Digger O’Dell; Terry Forsyth; Ross Rockett; Ross Surgenor; Denny Rand; Bill Price; Jerry Ferrie; Rick O’Dell; Basil Wells; George Jenson; the Vantreights; the Pollards; the Wades; the Haslams; the Montgomerys, etc. From 1972 to now, he has crewed for Roy and Mike Haslam; Neil and Trevor Montgomery; and is now on Jeff Montgomery’s crew. He has crewed several times for American USAC cars in California. He travels with Chris Schmeltzle to the U.S., even to New York and will be with him in California in November this year.
