Moving from his birthplace of Sarnia Ontario in his late teens, Dave Ferguson first worked as a gas station attendant and then in 1964 at the age of nineteen he began working at an “OK Tire” store. There he learned the fine art of “tire truing” and became one of only two Victorians who were extremely proficient at it. The truing process was of great benefit when it came to racing tires and went hand-in-hand with Dave’s interest in racing which began in 1965.
His active participation in racing started in 1972 when he became a crew member for Roy Haslam, looking after the tires on their 1966 AMC Rambler Marlin Super Stock. Word quickly spread throughout the racing community and Dave soon became the “go to guy” for finely-tuned racing rubber which sometimes saw him staying late at work on Friday afternoons to ensure that everyone had the tires they needed for the following evening’s competition.
Staying with Roy’s team for several years, he then hooked up with Neil Montgomery and Neil’s sons, Trevor and Jeff. After relocating to four different tire shops over the years, Dave purchased the “Six Mile Tire” shop in 1995, where he continued to service the needs of seventy-five percent of Western’s racers which included Stockcars, Mini Stocks, Super Stocks, Claimers, Sportsmen, Modifieds, Super Modifieds, Sprintcars and Old Timers as well as Sportscars and Drag racers.
Dave’s involvement in racing continues to this day and now stands at fifty-plus years. In addition to crewing for Roy and Roy’s son Mike as well as the Montgomerys, he assisted on American USAC cars in California as well as his involvement with Chris Schmeltzle, travelling at times as far away as New York. He is currently with Jeff Montgomery and is also the current President of the Victoria Auto Racing Hall of Fame.
